When learning any language, one of the most important skills that you need to practice regularly is communication. Communication skills help us to easily communicate and exchange information with native speakers, avoiding language disagreements that lead to unnecessary misunderstandings.
This lesson would like to introduce to you a series of communication lessons in Vietnamese by topic. In this article, let's start with the topic: Greeting for the first time. Let's learn more about greetings as well as introduce yourself in Vietnamese through this article!
When we meet someone for the first time, we should say hello to that person first. The most common greeting in Vietnamese is “Xin Chào”. You can simply say “Xin Chào”, or add personal pronouns right after that, such as: Xin chào anh, Xin chào chị, Xin chào bạn, Xin chào ông.… You can also say “Chào anh”, “Chào chị”, “Chào bạn”, “Chào ông”… instead of having to say “Xin Chào” as above.
For example:
You can ask other people's names by applying the following structure: “Tên của [communication object] + là gì?”. The [object of communication] part will be replaced with appropriate pronouns indicating the object of communication with you. For example, if the person you are communicating with is a female, you can ask the following: “Tên của chị là gì?” or "Tên của cô là gì?". You can also use abbreviations such as: “Tên [object of communication] + là gì?; [Communication object] + tên gì?”.
For example:
To introduce yourself, use the following structure: “Tên của tôi là + [your name]”. You can also apply shortened expressions such as: “Tên tôi là + [your name]; Tôi tên là + [your name]; Tôi + là + [your name]. The pronouns “tôi” will also change depending on the communication object.
For example:
