People, who want to have a good foundation in learning Vietnamese, must learn from the basics. In addition to the alphabet, numbers are also important for Vietnamese learners. In this lesson, you are shown how to count Vietnamese numbers and how to pronounce them correctly.

Counting from one to tens

In order to pronounce numbers correctly, you should listen to native speakers regularly.

From one to ten

Number	Pronunciation
0	Không
1	Một
2	Hai
3	Ba
4	Bốn
5	Năm
6	Sáu
7	Bảy
8	Tám
9	Chín

Counting in tens

a. From 11 to 19

In order to pronounce these numbers, people just add “mười” after the pronunciation of other numbers from one to nine.

For example:

Number	Pronunciation
11	Mười một
12	Mười hai
13	Mười ba

This rule is applied for numbers from 14 to 19.

b. From 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49,…, 90 to 99

To say numbers 20, 30, 40,…, 90, you can use the rule: First number + “mươi”.

For example:

20: Hai mươi
30: Ba mươi

To say numbers 21, 31, 41,…, 91, you can use the rule: First number + “mươi mốt”.

For example:

21: Hai mươi mốt
31: Ba mươi mốt

To say 22, 23,..., 29; 32, 33,..., 39; 42, 43,..., 49; 92, 93,..., 99, you use the rule:

First number + "mươi" + last number

Note: For the numbers ending with 5, you should pronounce "lăm" instead of "năm".

For example: 75: Bảy mươi lăm

Hundreds, thousands, millions, billions

Numbers 100, 200, 300,..., 900

To say these numbers, you use the rule: First number + "trăm".

Example:

100: Một trăm

200: Hai trăm

435: Bốn trăm ba mươi lăm

From 1000 to 1,000,000,000

1,000: Một nghìn

1,000,000: Một triệu

1,000,000,000: Một tỷ

Situations in which you need to use numbers

Counting the number of things

Example:

Nhà tôi có năm căn phòng.
Meaning: There are 5 rooms in my house.

Lớp học tại phòng BỐN LẺ NĂM (405).
Meaning: The class is held in Room 405.

Age

Example: Tôi MƯỜI BỐN (14) tuổi.
Meaning: I'm 14.

Phone number

Example: Số của tôi là KHÔNG CHÍN SÁU CHÍN NĂM SÁU NĂM HAI BỐN BẢY (0969 565 247).
Meaning: My number is 0969 565 247.
