Below is the very basic sentence structure in Vietnamese which expresses the idea that an action or event happens routinely or habitually.
Structure |
(S) + Verb (V) + Object (O) |
Example:
Tôi là sinh viên (I am a student)
Cô ấy thích câu cá (she likes to go fishing)
Anh ta tập thể dục mỗi sáng (He does exercise every morning)
Negative form
To formulate a negative sentence, “không” or “không phải” is placed before the main verb of the sentence.
Structure |
S + không/không phải + V + O |
Example:
Anh ta không phải là người tốt (he is not a kind person)
Tôi không thích hút thuốc (I do not like to smoke)
Interrogative form
To form an interrogative sentence, “không” is placed at the end of the sentence. To make the sentence sound more natural, “có” is placed before the main verb.\
Structure |
S + có + V + O + không? |
Example:
Chị ấy có phải là bác sỹ không (Is she a doctor)?
Em có yêu anh không (Do you love me)?
Họ có muốn đi cùng không (Do they want to go together)?
“Đang” is placed before the main verb in a sentence to refer to something taking place at the present moment.
Structure |
S + đang + V + O |
Example:
Họ đang làm việc/They are working
Trời đang mưa/It is raining
Negative form:
To formulate a negative form, “không” is placed before the main verb of a sentence. Although “đang” is the signal for the present continuous tense, it is omitted in the negative form because its presence makes the sentence sound not natural.
Example:
Lúc này họ không làm việc (They are not working at this moment)
Bây giờ trời không mưa (It is not raining now)
Lúc này họ không đang làm việc
Bây giờ trời không đang mưa
Interrogative form:
Same as the interrogative sentence in the simple present tense, “không” is placed at the end of a sentence.
Structure |
S + có đang + V + không? |
Example:
Họ có đang làm việc không (are they working)?
Trời có mưa không (Is it raining)?
Either adverb “vừa” or “mới” or “vừa mới” is placed before the main verb of a sentence to express the past event that has present consequences.
Structure |
S + vừa/vừa mới + V + O |
Examples:
Cô ấy vừa mới đến (She has just come)
Chúng tôi vừa thi xong (We have finished our exam)
Negative form:
Structure |
S + chưa/vẫn chưa + V + O |
Example:
Cô ấy vẫn chưa đến (She hasn’t come yet)
Chúng tôi chưa thi xong (We haven’t finished our exam)
Interrogative form:
Structure |
S + V + O + chưa? |
Example:
Cô ấy đến chưa (Has she just come)?
Họ thi xong chưa (Have they finished the exam yet)?
Example:
Chị ấy có phải là bác sỹ không ạ?
Trời có mưa không ạ?
Họ đã thi xong chưa ạ?
