Vietnamese people have spent thousands of years building and protecting the country. The history of Vietnam was full of blood and sweat of many ancestor generations because they had dedicated their life to the cause of national liberation.
These dedication has shaped good traditions of Vietnamese culture, including patriotism - a noble virtue of Vietnamese people. They are entitled to be proud of the magnanimous history of their country, and people who died for the independence of the country.
Patriotism is a beauty of Vietnamese tradition
V. I. Lenin used to say: “Patriotism, which is one of the deepest feelings, has been consolidated for hundreds of years and has existed in independent countries for thousands of years”. The patriotism of Vietnamese people has also existed since a long time ago when the first humans started living in Vietnam. It is considered as the core of Vietnamese tradition, and the connection between citizens to protect the country from invasions. Thanks to patriotism, Vietnamese people successfully escaped from Chinese domination after 1,000 years of fighting and being dominated by Chinese rules. The victory at the battle of Bach Dang river in 938 opened an independent era for the whole country. With indomitable spirit and unyielding will, our ancestors defeated many stronger invaders, such as Song under Le and Ly dynasty, and three invasions of Mongol under Tran dynasty. Therefore, patriotism is the strength of Vietnamese people to defend the country. In the document “Appeal for National Resistance” written by President Ho Chi Minh, he said: “We would rather sacrifice everything than lose our country, than return to slavery”.

Although there are not many history documentaries of Vietnam, Vietnamese people always remember the history of the country. They cannot forget the Hung King, Trung sisters, and Ngo, Dinh, Tien Le and other dynasties. Obviously, the fewer historical documents, the more details people remember. In every historical period, patriotism has its own manifestations due to the impacts of historical conditions and ideology. However, the purpose of patriotism is still protecting the freedom and independence of the country.
Nowadays, patriotism education is not only telling historical stories passed down through generations, but also highlighting the quality, morality and sentiment of Vietnamese people. It’s a systematic and moral activity of Vietnamese people through periods. Instilling patriotism in the young generation is important in the cause of building and protecting the country. Patriotism is a moral principle hidden in mind’s Vietnamese people, making them behave in the right way and appropriately. It was not available when nations were formed, but it is shaped and developed together with the history of a nation. These days, patriotism education must include teaching the pride in national traditions, loyalty and sacrifice for nation, party and people.

V. I. Lenin said: “Forgetting the past is betrayal”. Aware of this, Vietnam always considers teaching history for young people to make them know more about the country in the past. We revive history not to be complacent about our achievements in the past or exacerbate the conflicts, but to educate the young generation to understand patriotism properly. If you don’t know about our history, it’s difficult to have appropriate patriotism.
President Ho Chi Minh used to say: “Our people have an ardent patriotism. From past to now, whenever the country was invaded, the spirit was vibrant, it formed an extremely powerful and huge wave, it passed through dangers and difficulties, it submerged all country traitors and bandits”. The clearest expression of patriotism is awareness of national independence. Every Vietnamese person must consider national independence sacred and inviolable. Patriotism means national independence and freedom protection.
