About Cu Lan Village in Da Lat

Cu Lan Village is a small village in Suoi Can hamlet, Lat commune, Lac Duong district, Lam Dong province. It covers an area of about 20 hectares and is located about 20km away from Da Lat’s city center. People living here are mainly ethnic K'ho. If you want to approach Cu Lan Village, you have to go deep into the forest. There is a small clear stream surrounding the village, which is the main water source for daily activities of villagers.

Cu Lan Village is the first ecotourism destination of Lac Duong district. It has attracted a lot of attention since its foundation. Up till now, it has received lots of love from tourists all over the place. Most tourists to Da Lat want to visit and explore this wonderful village.

The origin of the village name

When it comes to the village name, there are many legends that have been handed down by word of mouth. When visiting this village, you will have a chance to find out about the origin of this special name from people living here.

Cu Lan Village in Da Lat City

It is said that this village is called Cu Lan as it is situated in the mountains, where Cu Lan trees (a kind of herbal tree) grow a lot. Besides, there is also an extremely rare animal that is listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book named Cu Lan .

People living here also passed down a legend about the unique name of the village. This legend refers to a young man who left the delta and moved to the mountain with a dream of building a paradise in the forest for his love. Many people considered it as an insane and silly idea. Therefore, they called him “Cu Lan” (The Silly Guy). However, it was the sincere love of The Silly Guy that touched the girl, so she decided to stay with him. They built their love cottage right next to the stream among green hills and wild flowers blooming on both banks of the river… Thereafter, they named their village “Cu Lan”. Today, this village has become a famous tourist attraction.
